Shalina Diagnostics Partners with LUTH Laboratories: A New Era
At Nigeria’s largest teaching hospital in Lagos, a lot of things are limited—from staff to power and infrastructure. It is thus a delight to see new developments that seek to abate this limitedness. The Shalina-LUTH partnership is one of such delights. This article explains why.
Annually, the Lagos University Teaching Hospital boasts of over 100,000 outpatient consultations and a capacity of 1,200 beds, making it Nigeria’s largest. To cater for such a large number of patients, there’s a need to make diagnostics easier, faster and bring it even closer to those patients.
Usually after a doctor makes a clinical diagnosis, he sends the patient to one of LUTH laboratories where samples are collected for precision diagnosis. The bottleneck here is that some of these laboratories do not have the required diagnostics equipment. But, Shalina has come to take some of that pain away.
Modern demands require modern technologies; the LUTH-Shalina partnership is not just restructuring the LUTH’s medical laboratories, it has now provided the machines they need to run tests quickly and effectively. In LUTH’s chemical pathology lab, one of Shalina’s stakeholders said “Once anyone comes in, they should know and feel like they are in a chemical pathology lab”. It is such an outlook that Shalina hopes to portray of LUTH.
On 20th June, Shalina posted on her website: “We’re proud to announce our partnership with Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) under a Public-Private Partnership to manage its laboratory services — a major step toward transforming diagnostics in Africa.”
The COO of Shalina Diagnostics, Gourav Bahl, also explicitly stated that this is not just a project—it’s a promise to empower lives through precision healthcare. And that can never be truer. It bridges the diagnostic gap for the patient on one hand, and then trains students on the other. You see, LUTH is a cornerstone of the nation’s medical education and tertiary care. This partnership indirectly serves as a platform to train students and interns, especially those studying medical laboratory science, allowing them to have hands-on experience and grasp the technical know-how of standard, modern laboratory equipment.
The private-public partnership, signed by Prof. W.L. Adeyemo, CMD of LUTH, and the COO of Shalina Diagnostics, is already underway to deliver comprehensive lab management services that are reliable, affordable, and accessible to all.
