Nigeria follows a 3-tier system of government where power is distributed between the:

1. The Federal Government
2. The State Government
3. The Local Government Authority

In this blog post, we’ll explore the list of the 774 Local Government Areas we have in Nigeria and their headquarters.

Nigeria, as an independent country, is divided into 36 States with  Federal Capital Territory (FCT). Every state in Nigeria is then divided into Local Government Areas (LGAs) — one of which is the state capital. For instance, the capital of Nassarawa state is Lafia, the most LGA in the state.

The LGAs are the third tier of government in Nigeria, overseen by the Local Government Council and headed by the Chairman of the Council. The Local Government Authority are closer to the people than the State and Federal Government and hence they address various aspects of local needs which may include education, infrastructure, social welfare and health care.

However, to make the government more accessible to the people, the Local Government Areas are further divided into wards, each headed by a councillor. For instance, Lafia LGA in Nassarawa state has 13 wards.

Just like each state has a capital; every local government in Nigeria has a headquarters. The headquarters serve as the central locations for the local government operations, including the offices of the LGA chairman, councillors and other administrative officials.
