There are currently 13 Nigerian states controlled by members of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).
If you’d like to read – we have previously written on the full list of Governors in Nigeria.
Here’s a breakdown of the current party affiliation of the 36 state governors:
- 20 All Progressive Congress (APC)
- 13 People’s Democratic Party (PDP)
- 1 All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA)
- 1 (NNPC)
- 1 Labor Party(LP)
PDP was at a time the major party ruling in Nigeria. In fact, the party holds the record of the highest number of seats in the National Assembly and also the highest number of Governors since 1999.
It wasn’t until 2015 when PDP was defeated in the Presidential elections (when Buhari won against Jonathan) that APC gained their rise.
Although, there are other INEC-registered political parties in Nigeria like APGA, LP, KOWA, YDP and the like, PDP and APC still stand as the two main political party that dominates elections and polls in across Nigerian states. A popular exception is Anambra state which is an APGA controlled state.
Now, let’s get into the crux of this post!

About the PDP Governors Forum
All the PDP governors make up a forum called PDPGF.
To clarify, the PDP Governors Forum (PDPGF) consists of state governors from the People’s Democratic Party in Nigeria. It was formed on February 24, 2013, following a split from the Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF).
The forum facilitates collaboration among governors to advance the party’s goals and synchronize policies across states. Bala Mohammed currently chairs the forum, succeeding Aminu Waziri Tambuwal in June 2023.
