This blog post delves into the list of new Nigerian senators. Each of the 36 states in Nigeria is divided into 3 senatorial districts. A senator heads the senatorial districts. The Federal Capital Territory of Nigeria is also headed by one senator. This makes a total of 109 senators in Nigeria.

The 10th National Assembly (NASS) of the Federal Republic of Nigeria is a bicameral legislature consisting of senators who were inaugurated on 13 June 2023 and will run their course until 13 June 2027. 

Currently, there are three (3) female senators in Nigeria; all others are male. The female senators in Nigeria include:

• Ipalibo Harry Banigo (Rivers West, PDP)
• Ireti Heebah Kingibe (FCT, LP)

It is also worth noting that a large chunk of Nigerian senators belong to the APC party followed by PDP.

Roles of Senators in Nigeria

Why do we have senators appointed in Nigeria in the first place? What are the responsibilities they are saddled with?

1. Constituency voice: Senators serve as the voice of their constituencies in the National Assembly, raising concerns, advocating for needs, and ensuring their interests are reflected in national policies and laws.
2. Public engagement: They hold town hall meetings, interact with constituents, and address their grievances, acting as a bridge between the people and the government.
3. Initiating and debating bills: Senators propose, discuss, and vote on bills covering various aspects of national life, from the economy and education to security and infrastructure.
4. Amending the Constitution: They have the power to amend the Nigerian Constitution, requiring a two-thirds majority vote, and ensuring fundamental laws reflect the evolving needs of the nation.
5. Scrutinizing executive actions: Senators hold public hearings, summon officials, and investigate the activities of the executive branch, ensuring transparency, accountability, and adherence to the law.
6. Monitoring public institutions: They oversee the عملکرد of government agencies, commissions, and other bodies, identifying and addressing issues like corruption, inefficiency, and abuse of power.
7. Approving presidential appointments: The Senate confirms or rejects key presidential appointments, including ministers, judges, and heads of important commissions, ensuring competent and qualified individuals fill these positions.
8. Ratifying treaties: They have the final say on international treaties and agreements, safeguarding national interests and ensuring alignment with Nigeria’s foreign policy objectives.
9. Impeachment power: The Senate has the sole authority to try and remove the President or Vice President from office in cases of gross misconduct or inability to perform their duties.
